Solid Pitching Tames Chargers
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -
The SVSU Cardinal baseball team swept a double-header from visiting
Hillsdale College 7-3 and 5-1 on Saturday to improve to 15-6 in
the GLIAC. The Cards got great starting pitching with both starters
earning complete game victories.
In game one, Hillsdale jumped out
to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but SVSU starter Heath Craven
(Hartland) settled down to allow just two more hits in
the final six innings, improving his mark to 6-0 on the season.
Craven is now 10-1 in his two years at SVSU, with the only blemish
coming against Division I Michigan State over a year ago. (4/23/01)
The Cardinals outfield (Jay Scott (Burlington, Ont.),
Eric Caldwell (Cary Grove, Ill.) and Ryan Wilkinson
(Dearborn) was a combined 6-for-9 at the plate in the opener,
scoring three runs and driving-in four.
In the nightcap, Scott Corby
(London, Ont.) allowed an RBI single in the second inning,
but went on to retire 18 of the next 20 hitters, walking just
two while striking-out eight batters. Corby (5-5) earned his first
complete game one-hitter of his career. He one-hit Mercyhurst
over six innings last season (3/24/01) before giving way to Adam
Ruffner (Gibraltar/Carlson) to close it out.
The Cards will look for win number
30 on the season as they do battle with the Chargers again tomorrow.
The doubleheader will begin at noon.
