SVSU Splits with Hillsdale
UNIVERSITY CENTER– The Saginaw Valley State University baseball
team split a GLIAC doubleheader with Hillsdale College Saturday.
The Cardinals won a shootout with
the Chargers in the opener, 19-15. SVSU pounded out 19 hits in the
contest, doing the most damage in an eight-run third inning.
Sophomore Justin Garcia (Bay City/Western)
led the Cardinal barrage with a two-for-four effort that included
four RBI and a run scored. Sophomores Chris Ebright (Ithaca)
and Adam Ruffner (Gibraltar/Carlson) each went two-for-three
at the plate with three RBI. Senior Steve Head (Montrose)
added a pinch-hit two-run double in his only plate appearance and
senior Josh Miller (Whitby, Ont., Can.) went two-for-four
and scored four times.
Senior Tony Castleberry (Northridge,
CA) had a huge game for Hillsdale, going four-for-five at the plate
with a double, a home run and seven RBI. Sophomore Tim Mustahpha
(Fort Wayne, IN) went one-for-three with a two-run homer, three
RBI and three runs scored.
Sophomore Andy Scott (Bay City/Western)
got the win for the Cardinals, pitching four innings and surrendering
six runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five. Scott
improved to 4-2.
Junior Mike Marvin (Hudson) took
the loss for the Chargers, allowing 12 runs on nine hits and four
walks. Marvin dropped to 2-8.
SVSU batted around and scored five
runs in the bottom of the first inning in the night cap but could
not hold off the Chargers, losing 9-8.
Freshman Matt Dudek (Kenton, OH),
now 3-8 on the season, picked up the complete-game victory for Hillsdale,
allowing eight runs on nine hits and five walks while fanning five.
Freshman Justin Young (Flint/Kearsley)
took the loss in relief for the Cardinals. Young did not get an
out in the fourth inning in relief of starter Shawn Racignol
(Petoskey). Young allowed three runs on three hits and a walk.
Racignol was charged with six runs on seven hits and four walks
while striking out six over the first three innings. Junior Ruben
Alvarado (Nuevo, CA) shutout the Chargers for the final four
innings, scattering three hits.
Junior Brian Gasidlo (Milan) carried
the hot bat for HC, going two-for-four with three RBI. Mustapha
continued his strong day with a three-for-five effort that included
three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.
Junior Zac Zdenahlik (Coloma)
went three-for-four in the contest with a pair of doubles and
three RBI. On the day, Zdenahlik went five-for-six with four RBI
and four runs scored. Junior Jason Valenzuela (Ontario, CA) chipped
in with a two-for-four effort with two stolen bases and two runs
scored.
The Cardinals are now 31–8-1 on the
season, 16-4-1 in the GLIAC. Hillsdale's season record now sits
a 14-31, 7-17 in league play.
The same two teams will battle tomorrow
in a doubleheader that begins at noon.
