Cardinals Split at Grand Valley

ALLENDALE – Saginaw Valley State University split a double header at Grand Valley State University Saturday, winning the first game 9-3 and dropping the second 11-3.
     Junior left-hander Tim Goheen (Proton Station, Ontario) improved to 6-0 on the season with his fourth complete game of the season. He allowed seven hits and two walks, struck out seven, and climbed into eighth on the all-time victory list with his 15th in three seasons. Goheen also picked off his 10th runner of the season.
     Junior Jason Valenzuela (Ontario, CA) continued his torrid hitting, going 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two RBI and three runs scored. Senior Joel Dohm (Owosso) was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman Zac Zdenahlik (Ithaca) knocked in a run with a single and senior Steve Groulx (Mt. Morris) drove in one with a double.
     Freshman right-hander Justin Young (Flint/Kearsley) took the Cardinal loss in the nightcap, falling to 3-2. He gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks, with five strikeouts in three and one-third innings. Junior Ruben Alvarado (Nuevo, CA) gave up six runs (four earned) on five hits in an inning, while walking one and fanning one. Senior Jeff Kimsel (Oscoda) gave up a hit and struck out two in one inning.
     The Cardinals had eight hits and had the bases loaded in each of the last two innings, without scoring. Senior Kraig Enders (Sanford/Sanford-Meridian), who had two hits, including a double. His long drive in the seventh was robbed by a diving catch by center fielder Andrew Badgero.
     Justin Norwood (3-1) took the complete-game win for the Lakers, walking five and striking out three.
     Mike Condon (Utica), Justin Garcia (Bay City/Western) and Valenzuela drove in the SVSU runs with singles.
     SVSU has a 17-6-1 overall record and is 6-2-1 in the GLIAC, while the Lakers are 16-9 overall and 7-3 in the league.
