GRAND RAPIDS – Saginaw Valley State University opened it Northern schedule with a 12-0 win at Calvin College Wednesday.
     The game was called after eight innings due to darkness, but by then the one-sided contest was no longer in doubt.
     Five Cardinal pitchers combined in the shutout and allowed only two hits to the Knights. Junior lefty Tim Goheen (Proton Station, Ontario) picked up the victory to improve to 2-0 on the year, allowing no hits and two walks, while striking out five in three innings of work.
     Sophomore left-hander Andy Scott (Bay City/Western) worked the first two innings, while three right-handers shared the last three frames. Freshman Scott Corby (London, Ontario), senior Shawn Racignol (Petoskey), and freshman Justin Young (Flint/Kearsley) each tossed a scoreless inning.
     The 14-hit Cardinal attack produced a steady diet of runs, scoring three in the fifth for their only big inning.
     Senior Joel Dohm (Owosso) continued his torrid pace with two more doubles and three RBI. He has nine two-baggers in the first 11 games for SVSU.
     Senior Steve Head (Montrose) also doubled and drove in two runs, junior Jason Valenzuela (Ontario, CA) had a single and a double and one RBI, senior Kraig Enders (Sanford/Sanford-Meridian) had two hits, including one of the five Cardinal doubles.
     Also getting in on the hit parade were sophomore Chris Ebright (Ithaca), with two hits and two RBI, senior Steve Groulx (Mt. Morris) had an RBI single, and sophomore Adam Ruffner (Gibraltar/Carlson) had a pair of singles.
     The Cardinals improved to 9-2 and have a week off before traveling to another MIAA foe Adrian College on Tuesday, March 21.
