Alma Halts SVSU Streak

ALMA -- Alma College pulled off a big win Tuesday, knocking off Saginaw Valley State University 7-6 in 10 innings.
     The Scots posted their second win in 11 games, while the Cardinals saw their six-game win streak snapped as they fell to 13-3.
     Jeff Lane's one-out single with the bases loaded drove home the winning run.
     SVSU senior Jeff Kimsel (Oscoda) tossed the final two innings to take the loss (0-1), allowing his first earned run of the season. Freshman Mike McGinnis (Monroe) faced only one batter – Lane, who had the game-ending hit.
     The Cardinals battled from behind to tie the game twice, scoring a pair of runs in the eighth inning to knot the score at 6-6. Senior Kraig Enders (Sanford/Sanford-Meridian) had an RBI double, and his single in the eighth tied the game.
     Sophomore Chris Ebright (Ithaca) led SVSU with three hits, while senior Steve Groulx (Mt. Morris) had two hits and an RBI. Senior Joel Dohm (Owosso) had an RBI double, his 10th of the season, and junior Jason Valenzuela (Ontario, CA) had a single and two stolen bases.
     Alma out-hit SVSU 13-10, led by Josh Wakefield with three singles and two RBI. Lane also had an RBI triple for the Scots. The Cardinals stranded 13 base runners, while the Scots left 8 on base.
     Senior Spencer Roecker (1-2) tossed two scoreless innings for his first win of the season, yielding two hits, a walk and striking out four.
     The teams will get a rematch at SVSU on April 27. Meanwhile, the Cardinals travel to Central Michigan University for a 2 p.m. contest Wednesday.
