Seniors Lift Cards Past Oilers

UNIVERSITY CENTER– A pair of seniors helped the SVSU baseball team sweep the University of Findlay in a GLIAC doubleheader by the scores of 6-1 and 4-3.
Senior Kraig Enders (Sanford/Sanford-Meridian) blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth that gave the Cardinals a commanding 5-0 lead in the opener. Enders went 1-for-4 in the contest with two RBI and two runs scored.
Junior left-hander Tim Goheen (Proton Station, Ont., Can.) notched the complete-game victory, surrendering just four hits and five walks while striking out four. Goheen kept his season record perfect at 7-0.
Findlay's Kirk Fortier (2-6) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits while fanning four.
Senior Joel Dohm (Owosso) proved to the hero in the nightcap.
Cardinal freshman Scott Corby (London, Ont., Can.) pitched a gem for the first five innings and had the Cards in control with a 3-1 lead until the top of the seventh.
The Oilers managed to load the bases in the seventh with no outs on a walk and a pair of infield singles. Corby then walked Findlay's Joe Seifried to cut the Cardinal lead to 3-2. Corby gave way to sophomore Andy Scott (Bay City/Western) who got a run-scoring double play and a strikeout to end the inning.
Junior Jason Valenzuela (Ontario, CA) started the Cardinal rally in the seventh with a one-out single to right field. Enders followed with a shot that went through the legs of Seifried, who was playing shortstop, that allowed Valenzuela to advance to third.
The plate was then set for Dohm, who punched a 1-2 single over a drawn in outfield that produced the game winning run.
Scott was credited with the win for pitching the final inning. Corby, who was charged with all three runs, pitched six innings allowing three hits and eight walks while striking out nine.
Findlay's Tommy Sawin suffered the loss after pitching the final 3 1/3 innings. He allowed 1 run on two hits while fanning two.
Sophomore Adam Ruffner (Gibraltar/Carlson) went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI in the contest, while Valenzuela finished 2-for-4 and scored the game winner.
The Cardinals improved to 22-6-1 on the season, 10-2-1 in the GLIAC. Findlay dropped to 15-16, 8-8 in league play.
The Cardinals continue their current home stand with double header Wednesday against Rochester College at 1 p.m. and a single game on Thursday against Alma College at 4 p.m.
