Caro Standout To Attend SVSU

UNIVERSITY CENTER— Saginaw Valley State University head baseball coach Walt Head announced that Caro High School standout Jason Newcomb has signed of a national letter of intent to attend SVSU in the fall.
A first-team Class "B" All-State selection as a junior last season, Newcomb has played in 32 games this year and is batting at a .587 clip. He has tallied 15 doubles, two triples and two home runs with 43 RBI while leading his team to a 24-10 record.
"He is the best hitter I have seen in 30 years of coaching high school baseball," said Caro High School varsity baseball coach Leon Graham. "He has been an integral part of our conference championship teams the past two seasons."
Newcomb compiled an impressive list of accolades for the 1999 season including: a member of the Saginaw News Dream Team; first-team all-conference, all-district and all-region; and was one of 50 high school athletes to attend the TEAMONE Showcase at the University of Notre Dame last August.
A three-sport athlete, Newcomb also has accumulated honors for his performance on the Caro football and swimming teams. He was a first-team all-conference defensive back, a member of the Bay City Times Dream Team, and a first-team all-area wide receiver in the Saginaw News and Tuscola Advertiser. Newcomb also qualified for the state swimming championships in the 50-yard freestyle and earned first-team all-conference honors in four different events.
"We are excited to have Jason joining our squad," stated Head. "We are hoping that Jason can make an immediate impact on our outfield."
SVSU finished with a 40-11-1 record this season and won the GLIAC championship with a 23-5-1 mark. The Cardinals made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs, bowing in the regional final.
