Ebright Leads Cards Past EMU
YPSILANTI – Sophomore outfielder Chris Ebright (Ithaca)
had a career day in leading the Saginaw Valley State University
baseball team to a victory over NCAA Division I Eastern Michigan
University by the score of 13-10.
Ebright went 4-for-7 at the
plate with a home run with five RBI. The four hits and five RBI
both represent career highs for Ebright.
Sophomore Andy Scott (Bay City/Western)
picked up the win for SVSU by pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing six
earned runs and striking out five. Eastern's Rob Lawwill took the
loss, lasting just two innings and allowing five runs on four hits
and three walks.
Junior Ruben Alvarado (Nuevo,
CA) picked up his third save of the season by pitching a scoreless
ninth inning.
Cardinal left fielder Joel Dohm
(Owosso) added a milestone to his career with his 52nd and 53rd
doubles, making him the SVSU all-time leader. The senior has placed
his name all over the Cardinal record books, including being in
second place on the career home run list with 23, three behind the
leader. Dohm went 2-for-5 in the game with a run scored an made
important outfield assist.
With the score 13-10 and nobody
out, EMU loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth on two singles
and a hit batsman, Alvarado got Nick Soliz to line out to Dohm in
deep left field. Dohm then threw a perfect strike to the plate to
throw out Frank Garcia who was trying to tag up from third base.
Alvarado then got a ground out to the shortstop to end the game.
Senior catcher Josh Miller (Whitby,
Ont., Can.) chipped in with a 3-for-5, one RBI effort. Senior
Kraig Enders (Sanford/Sanford-Meridian) went 1-for3, was
hit by three pitches and scored four runs and freshman T.J. Lehnertz
(Grand Rapids/Catholic Central) went 1-for-2 with four walks
and scored a run.
The win improves SVSU's season
record to 15-5-1, while Eastern drops to 11-17.
SVSU will now focus on conference
play as nationally ranked Ashland University visits University Center
for four games this weekend. The Eagles, ranked 22nd in the latest
NCAA Division II poll, bring a 19-10 overall record and a 6-2 conference
mark into the weekend series. Saturday's double header will begin
at 1:00 p.m. while Sunday's games will start at 12 noon.
