Warriors Winless at SVSU
UNIVERSITY CENTER- The Warriors of Wayne State
University finished the weekend winless at Saginaw Valley State
University, losing to the Cardinals 4-3 and 6-5. The first game
began as a pitching duel as Cardinal pitcher, Tim Goheen (Proton
Station) allowed just three hits, while Warrior pitcher Adam
Gust allowed only one hit until the fourth inning. Leading the
Cardinals at bat was sophomore, Sean Odamura (Mississauga,
Ontario/Lorne Park) who produced two RBI's off two hits in
four trips to the plate. Junior catcher, Chris Ebright (Ithaca),
had a good game on both sides of the plate as he had three hits
in four bats, while making a key out at home to end the fifth
inning. It took extra innings for SVSU to secure the win as at
the top of the seventh inning the Warriors rallied back to tie
the game. It wasn't until the bottom of the ninth with the bases
loaded that Odamura's sacrifice bunt, scored senior Adam Ruffner
(Gibraltar, Carlson) to win the game. Intermittent rain put
a damper on the second game, but that didn't stop the Cardinals
from out scoring the Warriors 6-5. Sophomore pitcher, Scott
Corby (London, Ontario/AB Lucas) continued to dominate on
the mound as after pitching today's complete game, he is now 7-1.
Despite being down two runs, the Cardinals rallied back to score
four runs off six hits in the third inning. Junior, Jay Scott
(Burlington, Ontario /Aldershot) led off the third inning
and the Cardinals offensive attack with a single and a key stolen
base. Scott went on to have three hits off four trips to the plate
today. Wayne State clawed their way back into the game at the
top of the sixth inning by scoring three runs and taking the lead.
This lead was short lived as Saginaw Valley went on to knock in
two more runs to finish the sixth inning. In the end this was
all they needed to capture the win and complete the series undefeated.
These two wins move the Cardinals to 25-9 overall and 15-4 in
the GLIAC.
The Cardinals next game will be at home against Division III opponent
Calvin College on April 25th. Game time is 4:00 pm.
