Ashland sophomore right-hander Ryan Hartzell survived
over seven hours of rain delays to pitch a complete-game shutout
to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 win over Saginaw Valley State in the
NCAA II North Central Regional in Indianapolis.
Hartzell scattered four hits and struck out nine
to improve his record to 11-6.
Junior right fielder Nathan Moore was the hitting
star for Ashland (38-17). He singled to drive in a run and then
subsequently scored on an RBI double by senior shortstop Jason
Boland in a two-run first inning. Then, in the bottom of the eighth,
Moore belted his 15th home run of the season to provide an insurance
run.
Saginaw Valley senior southpaw Tim Goheen allowed
three runs in 7 2/3 innings to suffer the defeat.
The loss puts the Cardinals out of the double emimination
tounament. Yesterday SVSU was defeated by Indianapolis-SIU-Edwardsville
18-6.
The Cardinals finish the season with a 37-13 record.
Ashland will next face the loser of Saturday’s 9
am winner’s bracket game between the University of Indianapolis
(50-13) and SIU-Edwardsville (37-24).
The elimination game will be played at 12:15 pm,
followed by the championship game at 3:30 on Saturday.
