Stephen Geffre is currently working at Augsburg College, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as their contracted Public Relations photographer. He started his photography career at the Minot Daily News as a photojournalist even before he graduated from college. Stephen has also done freelance work for USA Today, New York Times, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Green Spring Communications, and many other local and national publications. Stephen’s work is completely rooted in the photographic arts, yet it draws upon his fascination with the abstract world. Guided by the rules of serendipity, he takes the “reality” of the photographic image and twists it into a world of hidden shapes and distorted meanings, a jazz improvisation happening within the camera. Each shape plays off the one before and after to make the whole a greater sum than its parts.
Artist Statement: "I found a way to mesh my trouble with sequencing written language and the rules of photojournalism and adapt them to my art. Imagine: a photograph as a well written sentence that explains exactly what the author has intended; my fine art photographs, instead, are like sentences written by a person with dysgraphia. I move the words around, change the punctuation, and jumble the sequence. I take the viewer on a visual tour of what it is like to have my disability. Yet, I always decode the photographs with simple and direct titles. It is through my photographs that I am able to write."
