Letters: Carly Toyzan, May 2007 Graduate

Dear Alumni,

If you haven't been to campus lately, the changes might surprise you. Although campus certainly looks different, much of the transformation goes beyond the modern facelift visible on the surface. SVSU faculty, staff, and even students are establishing new academic and non-academic opportunities, many of which I have personally experienced.

AES07 CARLYTOYZAN LGProfessional and Technical Writing (PTW), though a relatively new program, has helped me develop necessary skills for the future. I also had the honor of participating in the seventh class of Roberts Fellows, a program created to develop students' leadership skills. One of the highlights of the program was a trip to China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. Through this opportunity and my semester abroad in England, SVSU has taken me places I only dreamed about before. Finally, participating in the Alternative Breaks (AB) program gave me the opportunity to lead two service breaks, one to Louisiana and one to Guyana (photo at the right). The AB program I helped create will encourage more students to serve long after I graduate.

Because of the unchanging aspects of SVSU, the knowledge, resources, and support by faculty and staff, I will pursue my dream of working as a magazine editor at one of the nation's top journalism schools, the University of Missouri-Columbia. Looking forward, I know my experiences at SVSU have prepared me for Missouri's intense graduate program. Regardless of the new adventures awaiting me at graduate school and beyond, however, my experiences at SVSU will always be some of my most memorable.
