Features: SVSU Alumni Association Year in Review
The SVSU Alumni Association continues to grow. 2007 began with 300 alumni and family attending the annual Alumni Family Fun Day with complimentary lunch and youth basketball clinics. The inaugural Detroit Metro Chapter event was hosted in Novi in May while the second annual Lansing Chapter event saw a 40% increase in attendance from 2006. The Tri-County alumni event at the Great Lakes Loons baseball game sold out with 300+ guests. Alumni and friends showed their generous support and enjoyed a day at Apple Mountain Golf Club in August for the 11th Annual SVSU Alumni Association Golf Outing to benefit the Bob Becker Endowed Scholarship.
Red Pride Friday kicked off the fall football season on October 5, 2007. Four 7-11 stores in the Saginaw Valley provided complimentary beverages to alumni showing their Red Pride by wearing RED . The Homecoming tailgate drew a 15% larger crowd than 2006 with live music, great food and fun. The following weekend, several hundred alumni came out for the co-tailgate with Michigan Tech University. The Association wrapped up the season with the annual Alumni Celebration honoring the 2007 alumni award recipients.
Beyond the festivities, the Alumni Association was able to:
- Award $6,325 to eight (8) students for the 2007-2008 Alumni Endowed Scholarship. The largest single award amount was $800.
- Recruit 54 new graduates to join the Alumni Association.
- Increase distribution of REFLECTIONS magazine to alumni by 92%.
- Increase distribution of the quarterly Alumni Enews by 25%.
- Recognize alumni in REFLECTIONS magazine, THIS IS SVSU publication, Alumni Enews and at SVSU Board of Fellows meetings.
- Design the new alumni online community and prepare for a 2008 launch.
- Raise $1,000 for Relay For Life.
- Send 27 care packages to U.S. Troops in Iraq and overseas.
The SVSU Alumni Association Events Committee is busy preparing for 2008. The entertainment for the 2008 Alumni Celebration will be the nationally acclaimed Capitol Steps, the troupe of Congressional staffers-turned-comedians who travel the country satirizing the very people and places that once employed them. The Alumni Celebration will be held Saturday, November 8, 2008.
