Mat Easterwood

Gladwin High School

Mat Easterwood is currently completing a double-major in Creative Writing and Theatre at SVSU.

“I first became interested in creative writing when I took a general education class.  Everything I learned make writing in general so much easier for me.  What I really like about creative writing is that you develop the ability to put yourself on display through fictional characters.  I love the process of making connections through abstract imagery and putting that onto the page.”

In addition to his coursework, Mat also works as a mentor in the SVSU Writing Center, and is involved with Cardinal Sins, SVSU’s student literary magazine.

“Working on campus in the Writing Center feels like the best job I’ll ever have because it does not seem like “work” at all.  Helping other students is very fulfilling, especially when you hear someone you helped did well on a paper.”

As a double-major in theatre, Mat is also studying acting and set design, and has been involved with many of the department’s excellent recent productions:  The Little Prince, The Tempest, Bat Boy, Actor’s Nightmare, Elephant Boy, Oliver, and Race.

“The theatre department is an amazing experience because they puts on really beautiful plays, and you have the chance to express yourself by putting yourself in the characters, which is an experience which is nerve-wracking and broadening at the same time.”

“Overall, SVSU has a lot to offer.  The campus community is very active, and when you’re here, you feel like you can talk to anyone.  There is a great sense of belonging at SVSU.”
