Mylinda Larkin is currently completing SVSU’s program in social work, and plans to continue on to a Master’s program after she is finished. Ultimately, Mylinda would like to work as a Registered Social Worker in the state of Massachusetts.
“I originally enrolled in the occupational therapy program, because I am interested in helping people, but then as I took more classes, I discovered that I really want to work on specific social problems. Doing case work with abused or neglected children is now my career goal.
“SVSU’s social work program is outstanding. There is a great deal of support available for students; the professors are attentive to students’ needs and they get to know you as a person. They helped me a great deal with everything I needed to get into the program.”
“The professors inspire me everyday to change our society for the better, and more importantly, they make me feel like they are interested in my success.”
“Anything you want to do within the realm of social work is available to you at SVSU. The program has a wide network of excellent connections throughout the state.”
“My most valuable experience so far at SVSU was when I took the class SW215. There is a requirement of 40 volunteer hours that students must complete for the course, and I got to work with elderly patients at Health Source.”
“I was so blessed to have this opportunity. Basically my work consisted of spending time with the patients in meaningful ways. It was an inspiring environment because everywhere you could see the commitment of the staff, and it made me realize that this is what I want to do with my life.”
Mylinda’s advice to current and upcoming students: “have a goal and work for it. Stay focused and it will happen for you, because there are so many people at SVSU who desire to help in the best way possible.”
