When Jesse Martinez, decided he wanted to major in Secondary Education with a concentration in History, he knew SVSU was the school for him. “The campus is amazing, and the way the Admissions Office presented the tour and information was great,” but that’s not the only reason Martinez chose SVSU; “It has a great teaching program, it’s one of the best in the state.”
Martinez, from the small town of Shepherd, Michigan, felt that SVSU offered great opportunities for graduates of the teaching program because of its location. “There are many great public schools in the area for student teaching experience, or for jobs after we graduate; since we are located in the Tri-Cities area we can choose from schools in Saginaw, Bay City, or Midland.”
Martinez always new he wanted to be a teacher, but it wasn’t until he took Professor Brad Jarvis’ classes that he knew he wanted to teach History. “Professor Jarvis is the best History teacher I have ever had, the way he teaches History is different from any class I have ever taken, and he has made me positive that I want to be a history teacher.”
Besides teaching History, Martinez also wants to coach high school football; he plans to use his degree as a stepping-stone, and eventually wants to pursue a Master’s degree and become a history professor at a University, and become a college-level football coach.
