Additional Endorsements Available to Secondary Education Majors
Students in the Secondary Education program may select from the following endorsement options:
- The Bilingual-Spanish Endorsement is available to interested candidates who plan to pursue a bilingual teaching career.
- Another option is the Special Education (Emotionally Impaired or Cognitive Impairment) K-12 Endorsement. This endorsement program requires successful completion of one approved major or two minors in the secondary education program. It also includes successful completion of twenty-two credit hours of foundation courses and sixteen credits of Special Education core coursework, as well as an additional semester of student teaching in a Special Education classroom.
- Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL/ESL) is one of the fastest growing areas in the fields of English and education. The English as a Second Language Endorsement will qualify candidates to be certified as ESL instructors at the elementary level. With the increasing population of English language learners and the importance of language learning as a dimension of the multi-cultural classroom, this endorsement is relevant to those teaching mainstreamed ESL students as well as those in ESL sheltered programs.
- The Computer Science Endorsement program has been prepared for students who are already certified at the secondary level and are seeking an additional endorsement in a subject area.
- The Social Studies Endorsement has also been prepared for students who are already certified at the secondary level and are seeking an additional endorsement in a subject area. The typical course of study for the endorsement will include a distribution of courses from the areas of History, Political Science, Economics, Geography and Sociology, appropriate to teaching social studies in secondary schools.
- The Physical Education for Students with Disabilities Endorsement is available for certified Special Education teachers or teachers certified in Physical Education.
