Secondary Education
SVSU is authorized by the state of Michigan to recommend students for initial certification at the secondary level (grades 7-12, or K-12 certification for selected majors and minors). Graduates receive the degree, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Secondary Education.
Why SVSU?
- SVSU’s Teacher Education (TE) program provides classroom instruction that reflects current best practice models and clinical experiences that promote equity in schools and society.
- SVSU’s TE faculty practice and nurture sensitive and caring attitudes and in relation to students in the secondary school environment, and strives to prepare successful teachers who bring a student centered perspective, commitment to scholarship and professionalism, critical thinking skills, reflective practices, and current technological preparation to urban, rural, and suburban sites.
- The SVSU College of Education is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and has been cited by NCATE for exemplary practice.
- SVSU’s Teacher Education program provides a supervised teaching experience in the first year of enrollment, so that students can experience what it is like to teach before having taken many Education courses – most programs in Michigan do not provide this.
- Field-based experiences are a key component of SVSU’s Teacher Education program. SVSU’s Office of Clinical Experiences works with partner schools throughout the state to coordinate placements. In compliance with the Michigan Department of Education, students are required to complete field work experience in educational settings. SVSU's College of Education adheres to and expands this requirement to 300 hours of pre-student teaching experience.
- SVSU’s TE program structures experiences for interacting with students, teachers, administrators, and support personnel as a means of strengthening knowledge of learners and subject matter.
- The average class size at SVSU is only 24 students, allowing for meaningful interation between faculty and students.
