“I chose the political science major because it is great preparation for law school,” explained Saginaw native Nick Tracy.
“I was first exposed to SVSU’s political science classes as a guest student, when I was still attending Delta College and planning to transfer to the University of Michigan. Out of all of the schools I visited and all the professors and recruiters I met, no other school made me feel so befriended and important.”
“The campus atmosphere is very close-knit; there are so many chances to get involved. For example, I am involved with the Center for Public Policy on campus, as well as the Political Science Students’ Association. These groups offer the chance to meet other students and, aside from having the opportunity to have great conversations with others who have similar interests, there is a tangible benefit to hearing the upper classmen’s stories about moving through the program.”
In fact, Nick and some of his peers are planning a Study Abroad trip next year to France and Germany.
“I met a student from Germany in one of my political science classes at SVSU, and we became friends quickly. When she graduated, she invited me to visit next summer.”
Nick studied abroad last year as well in London and Oxford, England.
“I’m very interested in comparative politics, looking at how different societies have invented different systems for governing themselves. The study abroad programs are a fantastic opportunity – studying in another country changed how I look at the world.”
Nick’s advice to future students: “It’s very important and beneficial to get to know your professors and the administrators at SVSU. Seek them out and use every resource they’re willing to share, because they definitely want to give.”
