Nancy Gartner

Nancy Gartner is a senior in the Political Science program, and currently serves as Secretary of the Political Science Students’ Association.

“There are so many opportunities to get involved at SVSU,” Nancy said.  “Those opportunities have helped me to become more knowledgeable about my future field, and have introduced me to the political science faculty members on a more casual basis.”

“I came to SVSU not knowing what I wanted to major in, but soon became interested in political science because of its broad range of uses in the real world.”

“I have taken a wide variety of political science classes and enjoy learning about world politics and public policy.  However, my favorite class was PS 262 - State and Local Government - which I had with adjunct professor Joseph Rivet (a former State Representative).

Nancy recently completed an internship at the Midland County Courthouse where she spent some of her time traveling between the various departments of government.

“My internship was an excellent experience,” Nancy explained, “because it gave me an overall feel for the entire court system.  I most enjoyed my time working in the Probation and Parole department.”

Regarding her first steps toward the internship process, Nancy explained that, “Dr. Trump was very helpful in helping me arrange an internship somewhere where I was interested in going.”

After college, Nancy plans to continue her studies in one of the graduate programs offered by Western Michigan, Central Michigan or the University of Michigan to get her master's degree in Public Administration.

“My main goal,” Nancy explained, “is to get a position that allows me to work with the public to better our society.

In the nearer future, however, Nancy plans on helping Dr. Trepanier with his Religion and Politics symposium, and also working with Dr. Trump to write a paper concerning the treatment of African Americans and their appearance in the Constitution in textbooks.  Nancy and Dr. Trump will present their completed work before the Midwest Political Science Conference

“I encourage any prospective student to attend SVSU for its Political Science program.  I feel that the program is well developed and the faculty members are enthusiastic about the material.  The opportunities provided with clubs and resources are quite broad and students get the personalized attention that they need to be able to gear their education towards their career goals.”
