Christopher Hennessy

Chris graduated from SVSU in 2005, and is now a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in the Master of Science program in Labor Studies.

“SVSU prepared me very well for graduate school.  Most important is the emphasis the Political Science department places on writing.  I wasn’t a very good writer when I started going at SVSU, but these people know how to teach writing and critical thinking skills, and now I consider myself a very good writer.”

Chris was elected at age 20 to a seat on the Bay City Council, where he served 4-year term from 2001 to 2005 while he was a student at SVSU.

“I decided to run for office for two primary reasons.  There were a series of changes taking place in my community and I wanted to make a difference and influence the outcome.  Second, I began to see the great need to have more young people involved in government.”

“But additionally, I was really inspired by Dr. Donahue’s class on State & Local Governments.  We studied topics I never expected to find under that heading, such as public artwork, urban planning, school administration, and even subdivision management.”

“I chose SVSU because my mother is a graduate, and it is close to home.  I had opportunities to go away to larger schools, but I am definitely happy with the choice I made.”
