Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy does not offer a major, but it does offer a structured minor that has been sufficient to enable students to enroll in nationally recognized graduate programs in philosophy and other fields.
Why SVSU?
- SVSU’s Philosophy graduates have consistently demonstrated the flexibility and capacity for growth that employers find so valuable today.
- SVSU’s Philosophy program trains students to develop skills that are transferable to a number of different careers and jobs, such as idea generation; analytic problem solving; diverse data integration; adaptation to change; persuasion; and summarization of complicated material.
- The average class size at SVSU is only 24 students, allowing for meaningful interation between faculty and students.
Special Programs: The Edwards Lecture
The Edwards Lecture in Philosophy and Religion is an annual lecture series that brings nationally recognized scholars to campus. Edwards Lecturers typically deliver a formal public lecture and often make guest presentations to a small number of SVSU classes on topics relevant to that scholar’s area of expertise. Recent topics include:
- Religion and politics
- Cosmology and the existence of God
- Perspectives on monotheism
- Islamic fundamentalism
- The Holocaust
