Mechanical Engineering
The SVSU Mechanical Engineering program is structured around the themes of lifelong learning; engineering theory; product design; experimental/hands-on skills; and professional practice.
Students are educated in the fundamental technical areas of mechanical and electrical engineering, including the foundation of mathematics, computational skills, and physical science, appropriate for an entry level professional position or graduate school.
Students develop the skills inherent in the design process, including the ability to identify problems, investigate creative and functional solutions, effectively communicate results and work in a collaborative environment.
Why SVSU?
- All ME courses and labs are taught by qualified doctorate holding faculty, not graduate students.
- Typical ME classes are between 10-25 students, which allows professors and students to interact one on one and develop a true relationship.
- The program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
- Laboratory classes feature hands-on use of modern instrumentation and equipment, which are used to reinforce engineering theory and application.
- Many student organizations are available for networking opportunities, including Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) that designs and manufactures a race car for annual Formula SAE competition and Society for Women Engineers (SWE), to name a few.
- Students complete a year-long senior design project, which is completed for a local business. This comprehensive project includes problem definition, design, purchasing, manufacturing, and testing. Few other universities have this kind of realistic, real world senior design project.
- The newly renovated SVSU Pioneer Hall of Engineering opened in August 2007 featuring a newly constructed 28,000 square foot, 2-story addition. This combined with the existing remodeled area will now create a 72,000 square-foot building that will house engineering faculty offices and state-of-the-art classrooms and labs.
