Justin McLaren

Owendale-Gagetown High School

Justin McLaren is a sophomore in SVSU’s History program, where he is concentrating on Early American history.  Justin is planning to apply to graduate school and to become a history professor himself.

“I have always had a mild interest in history, but when I took Professor Renna’s general education survey course, his enthusiasm hooked me.  Since then, I have taken an upper-division course from him on the France up to the French Revolution, and I can’t begin to list everything I’ve learned.”

“Most importantly, SVSU’s history classes teach you to look at how historians work – how to analyze primary historical sources and to develop meaningful narratives from those sources.”

“My mindset has changed with every class I’ve taken.  It takes a lot of effort to develop a perspective that will allow you to look at the events of the past and analyze the cause and effect relationships at work.”

“This program also emphasizes depth of vision in working with history, the ability to read between the lines, make connections, and identify patterns.  This is a skill that is applicable and important to every discipline.”

Justin is beginning the process of getting ready to apply to graduate programs.

“Professors Jarvis and Teed have done a lot to help me know what to look for in a graduate program, and how to make myself stand out.”

“Overall, the greatest strength of an SVSU education is the ability to interact with full professors on a daily basis.  The professors are helpful, available, and willing to work with you.”

Justin’s advice to other students:  “Use your classes to develop your ability to voice your opinion during discussion.  I have gained confidence by being vocal in class and it makes a tremendous difference in the amount of knowledge you will retain.  Most important, it will make you become a more articulate person.”
