Jeff Schulz

Detroit Catholic Central High School
Intern, Leonard & Co., a division of The Investment Consulting Company

Jeff Schulz is a pitcher on the SVSU varsity baseball team, and is currently a student in the Economics program.

“I chose SVSU because it is in a small community, something I appreciate having grown up in Detroit.  The baseball coach arranged a visit, and I was awarded a University Scholarship, so the choice was made.”

Jeff is completing a dual degree in Economics and Finance, and he currently works as an intern at Leonard & Co., a financial consulting company in Troy, Michigan.  Jeff’s duties include making cold calls to potential clients, analyzing accounts, researching mutual funds, and organizing informative workshops for clients.

“I interact with potential clients on the phone daily for my internship at Leonard & Co., which has taught me more about verbal communication than is possible to learn in the classroom.”

“The Economics program has a good structure to it, so that you first get a good overview of Micro- and Macro-Economics, and then you start looking at more specialized topics in greater depth.  For example, you learn how to analyze the factors that influence supply and demand for any particular market, after you have gained a good understanding of the basics.”

“My favorite professor is Professor Welch – his teaching style is great, and he really cares that students are able to do well.  When he is teaching a difficult concept, such as regression in statistics class, he works through problems step by step with the entire class and relates it to something tangible, like buying a home.  And then, it just clicks.”

“The most challenging class I’ve ever taken was introductory marketing, but it was very valuable because we worked on a real life project with an actual budget, given to us by SVSU’s tennis team.”

“We created a plan for the tennis team to raise $5,000 each year for new equipment.  The class worked in groups and learned about all of the various options such as fundraiser dinners, how to work with area businesses and enlisting their help, and strategies using the internet.  Ultimately, we founded the SVSU Tennis Boosters Club, which hopefully will continue to exist every year.”
