“I always wanted to be a cop,” said Kami Gibbs, Saginaw native and SVSU senior.  “I wanted to challenge myself to do something like that because everyone sees me as a ‘girly girl.’  But now I’ve decided to go to law school and study criminal law after I graduate.

CJ--Kibbs--LG“The most important thing about SVSU’s Criminal Justice program is that if there’s something you want, it’s within your grasp.  The faculty here is so supportive and knowledgeable – everyone here is full of heart and wants to make a difference in people’s lives.”

“My favorite professor is Dr. Priehs.  I’ve taken every class he’s offered, and he tells it like it is.  He will teach you everything substantive you will ever need to know.  He’s very practical and always willing to help.”

“Aside from academics, our program is a lot of fun.  There is a huge core of students who I met in my first introductory CJ class, and we’ve become really close as we moved through the program – we have an absolute blast!”

In addition to her major program in Criminal Justice, Kami is also a student in the University’s Roberts Fellows program, a leadership development program for exceptionally qualified students, which is centered on creating exciting opportunities for students that go well beyond the traditional college experience through exclusive seminars, guest speakers and a semester abroad.

“I’ve got to meet so many people who I would never have thought I’d have a chance to meet.  For example, Michigan State Representative Carl Williams came and spoke to our class recently, and we’ve had visitors from the F.B.I. and many other organizations.”

The program is based on a multi-disciplinary approach to leadership, drawing on the disciplines of philosophy and politics, and teaches students to become virtuous leaders.

“Next year, all the Roberts Fellows students will travel as a group to China, Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan – it’s exciting because we’ll get to see first-hand all of the things we’ve been studying, like Confucian philosophy.  The program is great because it has really shown me that there’s something much more out there than what I’m used to seeing.”
