Edwin H. Clark
... is currently completing an internship at the Saginaw County Sheriff’s Department, where he will spend a total of 120 hours assisting the sheriff deputies as they perform their daily job routines.
“I’m doing everything the deputies do, from riding along in response to any calls that come in, to observing and processing inmates at the jail,” Ed explained.
With only four shifts completed, Ed has already assisted on a domestic violence call resulting in an arrest; observed traffic stops; and even personally given CPR to an 83-year-old woman (Ed recently completed his CPR certification at SVSU).
“I really enjoy helping people, and I enjoy solving conflicts. That’s what law enforcement is all about.”
“I chose SVSU because I wanted to play football here, with no idea about what I wanted to do for a career, and my roommate talked me into taking my first Criminal Justice class. But I realized right away while taking ‘Intro. to Criminal Justice’ that this was the field for me.”
“The teacher really sold me through all the stories he told us from his own personal experience in the field, and when I heard about all the people he has helped. The faculty here inspires you to work hard. If you put in the effort and seek their help, they will return it. All of them definitely meet you more than halfway.”
Ed’s life on campus is very full – he has been playing football for the Cardinals since 2003, and he received a scholarship after playing for two years. In addition, he works as a weight room supervisor in the Ryder Center, maintaining and cleaning the equipment; and even picking up odd jobs working security at the many special events that are hosted on campus. During the summer, he returns home to help out on his family’s dairy farm in Yale, Michigan in St. Clair County.
On top of all that, Ed is especially excited about joining the Criminal Justice Society, a student club for majors, and he plans to run for one of the board seats next semester!
After graduation, Ed is looking forward to applying to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, where he will try out for the S.W.A.T Team.
