This paper discussed the challenges that emerged with Saginaw Valley State University's pilot assessment of its relatively new undergraduate major in Professional and Technical Writing. The challenges included developing and refining the assessment instrument; accommodating changes in requirements, course content, and faculty; valuing diversity; addressing technology issues surrounding the use of electronic portfolios; making faculty time for assessment; and using information gained from assessment for multiple audiences and stakeholders.
